What a diagnostic test is
An IGCSE Diagnostic Test is a 30-45 minute session that checks how a student thinks through Math or Science questions. It looks for patterns behind mistakes, not just the final score.
How it differs from a mock exam
A mock exam measures performance across a paper. A diagnostic test asks narrower questions so the tutor can see whether the issue is a concept gap, calculation habit, command-word misunderstanding, or exam technique.
What skills are checked
Depending on the subject, the session may check core concepts, algebra, graph reading, units, formulas, practical skills, written explanations, and reasoning. The tutor may also ask the student to explain their working aloud.
What parents receive
Parents receive a weak point summary, a subject gap map, a recommended study roadmap, and suggested learning priorities. The language should be clear enough for parents to understand without needing technical curriculum knowledge.
How the roadmap is used
The roadmap helps decide what should be rebuilt first. Some students need concept support; others need past-paper technique or a better review system. The next step should follow the evidence from the diagnostic session.
What happens after the session
Families can choose tutoring, past-paper training, or independent revision based on the roadmap. There is no need to commit to a long course before understanding the student’s actual needs.
